WHAT IS AN INVENTION:

1. Something that is an improvement on an existing product i.e.

(a) The first Can-Opener was a lever action cutter, and very difficult to use.

(b) The second Can-Opener has a roller cutter and cuts the top out of a can.

(c) The third Can-Opener has a roller cutter, but cuts the top off by cutting the side.

(a), (b) & (c) are all inventions and have earned royalties for their inventors.

OR

2. Something completely new and has never been seen before i.e. Edison's Light Bulb.

A modification, variation, even a different use of an existing product can all be classed as inventions.

When the idea presents itselfWRITE IT DOWN

Don't wait till later **** Ideas are elusive, so don't let them escape ****

Don't judge your idea. Just write it down

Have a note pad and pencil close by at all times (In your pocket, lounge-room, bedroom, work desk, car, etc)

After a few weeks, look at your ideas again, sort out the top one or two. File the rest (don't throw them out)

Write down more details on how it works and who will use it. It is not necessary to build a prototype. A prototype is only necessary for complex inventions.
